Orthodontic Emergency Care

Orthodontic emergencies can occasionally happen during treatment, especially with braces and other orthodontic appliances. At Central Michigan Orthodontics, Dr. Riley and our team are here to help you manage unexpected issues quickly and comfortably. While many orthodontic problems are not true emergencies, it is important to contact our office if you experience discomfort, broken appliances, or injuries involving your teeth or mouth.

What Types of Orthodontic Emergencies Can Occur?

Orthodontic emergencies generally fall into two categories:

  • Problems related to braces or orthodontic appliances
  • Direct injuries involving the mouth or teeth

Our team will help determine the best next steps and schedule an appointment if necessary.

What Should I Do If a Wire or Bracket Breaks?

Occasionally, brackets, bands, or wires may loosen or break during treatment. While these situations are usually not serious emergencies, they should still be addressed to prevent treatment delays or discomfort.

Until you can visit our office:

  • Cover irritating wires with orthodontic wax
  • Use a pencil eraser or cotton swab to gently reposition a wire
  • Leave loose brackets or bands in place if possible
  • Carefully trim a poking wire with clean nail clippers if instructed

Please contact our office during patient hours so we can schedule a repair appointment.

What Should I Do After an Injury to My Mouth or Teeth?

If you experience a direct injury involving your mouth or teeth:

  • Apply ice to the affected area immediately
  • Contact our office as soon as possible
  • Contact your general dentist if a tooth is fractured, displaced, or knocked out

In some cases, dental injuries require evaluation by your family dentist before orthodontic appliances can be adjusted or repaired.

Are Orthodontic Emergencies Treated After Office Hours?

Yes. If you experience significant pain or an urgent orthodontic issue after office hours, an emergency contact number is available through our office phone system for additional assistance.
